How to make extension or balance due tax payment 

  1. Go to IRS.gov/payments:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-personal-taxes-from-your-bank-account

select Make a payment.

2. On the next screen, select the following options as shown in the screenshot below and then click Continue

Apply payment to = Form 1040 Income Tax

Reason for Payment= Extension

Note:

  • Choose Estimated tax if you like to pay estimated tax for the following tax year (2026)
  • Choose Extension if you cannot file tax now, but want to make extension tax payment to avoid late payment fee for the current tax year (2025)
  • Choose “Balance Due” if you like to make the tax owed payment amount for the tax year.

Tax Period for Payment= 2025 (It is important to choose the right tax year you like to make the tax payment to or else the payment will be applied to the wrong year)

In the next screen, fill in the personal information and the information must be matched exactly with your prior year’s tax return (First Name, Last Name, primary taxpayer’s SSN, Date of birth, Taxpayer’s address). Click Continue to go to the next screen

NOTE: Choose “2024” for “Tax Year for Verification”. The system will match information you enter with the prior year’s tax return you have filed with the IRS)

In the next screen, you are going to enter your payment information (Payment Amount, Payment Date, Bank Account)

Lastly, review and verify the payment information is entered correctly before you are ready to submit. Save the last screen in the PDF file as a confirmation and send to your CPA for tax filing record.
